Lets buy locally from Independents for Christmas

Shop Independent this ChristmasIf we can buy as much as possible of our shopping this Christmas in independent local shops, then we can make a big difference to ensuring that these shops stay open, despite the recession.  If we buy Irish Goods, we are also supporting Irish jobs.

We salute initiatives like http://www.iloveterenure.ie, and wish them the best in 2012.  Perhaps we might see similar initiatives to support jobs in other parts of Dublin 12, 10, 8 and 6w in the coming months.

Other useful websites include www.localmarkets.ie and the American Website, http://www.shoplocally.com/

Local Green representative, Oisín Ó hAlmhain, has also some information on his website at http://www.real-dublin.ie/eat-dublin-buy-dublin

Canal Cleanup recognised by City Council

The Grand Canal Cleanup group, which has been meeting on the Second Sunday of every month at Dolphin’s Barn Bridge since April 2010, has received a certificate of merit from Dublin City Council at the South Central Area City Neighbourhood Awards 2011.

Oisín picking up the certificate of merit

The award is recognition for the group who have been picking up litter from the Canal towpath between Dolphin’s Barn Bridge and Sally’s Bridge every month since April last year.  They have worked closely with the Waste Management Services of Dublin City Council, who nominated them for the competition.  We also work with Waterways Ireland.

You can follow the group on facebook here,  or join us on the Second Sunday of every month at 1pm at Dolphin’s Barn Bridge (google map here)

As well as organising the monthly cleanup, the group hopes to be a focus for the future development of this part of the canal as an amenity which can develop biodiversity in line with the City Council and Waterways Ireland plans.  The group can be contacted at GrandCanalCleanup (at) gmail.com

Composting, the planet and you!

On Wednesday 28th September the Dublin South Central Branch of the Green Party will be holding an open meeting/ masterclass on Composting.

The meeting will take place upstairs in Rosie O’Grady’s Pub on the Harold’s Cross Road, opposite Maxol (Bus routes 49/A and 16/A)  We will start at 8:30pm.

We look forward to meeting anyone who is interested in composting.

Compost is so much more than a great way to divert waste from landfill (and incineration) Compost is a great way to get your garden blooming and your vegetable patch thriving. DSC Greens believe that we have to get Dublin Growing, as one part of getting Ireland moving again. First steps, are always small but important, so we are starting with the soil.

The masterclass will be given by Linda Gibson.

You can find the facebook event here

Ó hAlmhain calls for ban on election posters

Dublin South Central Green Party candidate Oisín Ó hAlmhain has called for a ban on election posters on lampposts at the next General Election and is contacting other candidates, asking them to agree to a poster ‘pooling’ system in the constituency.

Mr. Ó hAlmhain said: “At the last elections, there were 15,000 plastic posters on lampposts in Dublin South Central. While I myself enjoy the colour that postering brings to election campaigns, many people do not like them and may find them untidy and sometimes intrusive.

“In some cases when they are placed at a lower level they can be a hazard to people with limited vision, or cyclists. They are also a hazard and a litter problem when blown down. I think if we can avoid them the public in general will be grateful.”

The Green Party candidate says that as an alternative, all candidates could arrange to have their images displayed on a large board in derelict areas or on the inside of windows in vacant retail premises.

“This will also save the taxpayer money,” said Mr. Ó hAlmhain. “Candidates who receive votes greater than a quarter of the quota have their election expenses refunded. I estimate there could be a saving of €90,000, in this constituency alone, if all candidates opted for a poster pooling system.

Mr. Ó hAlmhain said if he was unsuccessful in getting agreement from other candidates, he will buy his posters from a local supplier and only poster in a limited number of commercial areas. “I will avoid residential areas – but I hope that other candidates will agree to what I believe is an important environmental and economic initiative.”

Inchicore Residents Stand Up to Irish Rail

In April of last year, residents in the peaceful Railway Works Estate in Inchicore learned that Irish Rail had plans to locate a very large construction site in the Pond Field, in the centre of the estate.

They formed “Inchicore On Track” a community campaign aimed at achieving a proper Planning Framework and a real and meaningful consultation process in relation to the proposed extension of the Dart Underground Project to Inchicore.

*Their non-confrontational approach has meant that Irish Rail have moved a lot of the construction into the Inchicore Railway Engineering Works, but the work goes on to ensure that the DART project and further developments associated with it are planned with the full participation of communities
